Application of Different Types and Materials of Stainless Steel Shots in Sandblasting and Shot Peening

2026-03-27

Stainless steel shots are widely used in sandblasting and Shot Peening processes, with their application effects mainly determined by material and particle size. The right match between the two is crucial to achieving efficient cleaning, surface strengthening and finishing of workpieces, which plays an important role in many industrial fields.
In terms of materials, 304 austenitic stainless steel shot is the most versatile, with good corrosion resistance, strong toughness and no iron pollution, suitable for cleaning non-ferrous metals, stainless steel parts, precision components in aviation and automotive industries, as well as pre-coating treatment. 316 austenitic stainless steel shot, with added molybdenum, has excellent chloride corrosion resistance, mainly used in marine engineering, chemical industry and high-salt environments. 410/430 martensitic/ferritic stainless steel shot, with high hardness and low cost, is applied to heavy machinery, steel structures and high-strength parts for intensive shot peening. 201/202 austenitic stainless steel shot is an economical option for indoor workpieces with general anti-rust requirements.

Particle size directly affects impact force, cleaning efficiency and surface roughness. Fine particles (0.2–0.5mm) are used for precision parts, thin-walled soft metals and finishing to avoid deformation or scratches. Medium particles (0.6–1.2mm) are the most versatile, suitable for regular cleaning and pre-coating of auto parts and mechanical components. Coarse particles (1.4–2.5mm) are used for heavy workpieces to remove thick oxide scale, heavy rust and old coatings efficiently.

Key application principles include avoiding iron ion pollution by using compatible stainless steel shots, matching shot hardness with workpieces, and selecting appropriate equipment. This material and particle size matching guide provides practical support for enterprises to improve processing efficiency and product quality.
